D. Ralph Millard, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Millard,
retired from the University of Miami as Chief of the Division of Plastic
Surgery, is regarded by many as the master of soft tissue plastic surgery. In
Dr. Anthony Wolfe's book, PLASTIC SURGERY OF THE FACIAL SKELETON (1989, Little,
Brown, & Co., Boston), he states that Dr. Millard's "emphasis on the basic
principles of plastic surgery (which are as applicable to skeletal surgery of
the face as they are to soft tissue plastic surgery), his meticulous surgical
technique, his creativity and constant search for a better way of doing things,
his prompt adoption and acknowledgment of the good ideas of others, and in
particular, his fierce desire to get the best possible result for each patient,
he has virtually established the modern American school of plastic surgery."
Dr. Millard retired in the year 2000 to care for his ill-stricken wife and
soul-mate, Barbara. When Dr. Millard said, "Know the Ideal, Beautiful, Normal .
. .," he had Barbara in mind. Her image sustained him and propelled him to
Olympian heights during his career. Barbara Smith Millard passed away of heart
failure on July 31, 2000 in Miami, Florida.
Dr. Millard currently resides in Miami. His passion for the surgical
repair of facial deformities has been passed on to the members of the D. Ralph
Millard Society & Education Foundation.
